  • Amsterdam City Swim

This is probably one of the most talked-about events in the Dutch Agenda: the yearly Amsterdam City Swim, taking place this year on the 7th of September. Launched only three years ago in 2011 by a group of fourteen friends who decided to swim the canals of Amsterdam to raise awareness about ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), it has grown to such great proportions that the Queen Maxima herself took part in the event in 2012.

Every one of the 1000 swimmers had to raise a minimum of 300 euros to take part in the gruelling 2000m meters swim. It is meant to start at the Marine Establishment of Amsterdam, head down the Nieuwe Herengracht and past the Theatre Carre on the Amstel before swimming up the Keizersgracht.

This year, the event will open with the City Swim Amsterdam for Kids from 10.00-12.00, when all the younger ones aged from 10 to 14, will swim from the Hermitage to the Keizersgracht. The adults will then follow with a departure scheduled for 13.00.

The swim is always guaranteed to bring a great atmosphere, and everyone is encouraged to come and greet the swimmers along this unique route specially engineered by the Amsterdam City Swim Foundation in collaboration with Waternet.

The participants will be greeted by a warm shower upon crossing the finish line and a set of energy bars and energy drinks to gain some vitality back in order to attend the awards ceremony and hit the Pasta Afterparty!
