When our world-famous concert hall turns 125 years old this year, there are many candles on the birthday cake for Amsterdam concert-goers to help to blow out.
The Concertgebouw is celebrating its birthday in 2013 by featuring top classical performers such as Bernard Haitink, Valery Gergiev, Angela Gheorghiu, Eva-Maria Westbroek, Mariss Jansons and Leonidas Kavakos.
With its new name of the Royal Concertgebouw being awarded as a birthday present, our biggest and oldest classical concert hall is highlighting its history with a Jubilee Concerts series that each month remembers a different decade of the hall’s musical life and heritage.
The founding years of 1888-1899 for the new hall were remembered performances in January. The following months then surveyed the varied musical range from the birth of jazz to the age of pop and rock.
To finish off the year with the bright and confident sound of the New World, December will see a big education project based on Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story, to inspire further a new generation of music lovers and performers.
