Cultural Events Taking Place in Amsterdam in November

The year is fast coming to a close and you are there wondering what the coming Christmas period holds for you. Cheer up! You don’t have to wait for December to have a good time. November holds much promise in Amsterdam. A number of heartwarming events are slated for this month but I will tell you of three that stand out.

Should you miss the museumnacht, by all means do not miss the shadow festival. The shadow festival is an event that runs along the same lines as the International Documentary and Film Festival of Amsterdam but in a miniature scale. Here budding film directors present bold new ideas in the form of short films and documentaries that are exciting to watch. The presentations are not as refined as the international cinema productions but are audacious in content and visual display. Thereafter informal discussions are held about the presentations. These discussions, which involve the directors, producers and the viewing public, are important especially for those who have an interest in film making and documentaries.

Movember is a worldwide event that aims to raise awareness about men’s health issues particularly prostate cancer. It aspires to increase early detection and treatment with the eventual aim of reducing preventable fatalities. In the Netherlands, Movember aims to increase awareness and raise funds for prostate cancer research.

It begins on 1st November with every participant having a clean shaven face. The participants also called ‘Mo Bros’ grow a moustache over the duration of the month. They then go around raising funds and seeking sponsorships from family, friends and well wishers for their moustache growing efforts. The funds collected are channeled into prostate cancer research. In the year 2011 Mo Bros in the Netherlands collected a staggering 300,000 Euros.

This year, a series of exciting events have been organized to commemorate the event.  The first one is an art exhibition at Bar Moustache featuring Getty Image’s collection of moustache-related art works. The exhibition is still open for viewing till the end of Movember. Kriterion is also staging a VrijmiMo event on 2nd November. The rock band Mannen met Snorren (Men with Moustaches) from Amsterdam is set to grace the occasion. Come and enjoy their latest hits! There is also going to be a major event taking place on 25th November. The FIRST EVER ‘BREWSTACHE’ is scheduled to be held at the Amsterdam Brewing Company. Ontario beers will be on special offer to support the fund raising effort. Tickets are already on sale at Amsterdam Retail Store (21 Bathurst St). Space is limited so buy your tickets early. A number of brewers have already confirmed participation. These include Great Lakes, Stone Hammer and Wellington among many others. This is a once in a lifetime event. You can’t miss this one!
