Door 74 was recently voted Best Cocktail bar in The Netherlands by magazine Esquire. The bar is the very first speak-easy bar in the Netherlands and has been gaining (international) allure since its opening in 2006. To reach the bar you have to knock on a hidden door somewhere on Reguliersdwarsstraat (the exact address is on a need to know basis).
Esquire’s jury visited cocktail bars all over The Netherlands for the fourth time in the magazine’s history. 17 bars ended up on the shortlist, all of which are well worth a visit. Bars in Amsterdam include ‘Dvars’ (second place), Mystique, Henry’s Bar (previous winner), Hiding in Plain Sight (previous winner), Tales&Spirits and Swych (pop-up).
The jury commented on the drinks: ‘The complexity, balance of flavours and technical ablity was great in all the cocktails we tried’. The bar itself is described as ‘dark, sexy and a bit dirty, everything a good cocktail bar should be’. So what makes a great cocktail bar according to Esquire? Hospitality, knowledgeable staff, a good price, nice interior design and good atmosphere.
Door 47’s current menu is called To Infinity and Beyond and features cocktails aptly named ‘Searching the Black Matter’, ‘Cat Woman of the Moon’, and ‘Let’s Conquer Space’. Prices range from €13 to €25.
