The Tassenmuseum (Museum of Bags) on the Herengracht will invite a glamorous plastic guest familiar to many girls around the world to be on show there.
Next year is the 50th anniversary of the arrival of the well-known Barbie doll to the Netherlands, to find her way into treasured places in the bedrooms of many Dutch girls.
The museum says that Barbie, as the most popular fashion doll ever created, is a reflection of her time. The chic and very blond young woman has a huge Paris haute couture wardrobe that can always be topped up further from the toy shop.
Launched in 1959, Miss Barbie was made by the US toy company Mattel from a creation of American businesswoman Ruth Handler, who used a German doll called Bild Lilli as her inspiration.
The exhibition, to be shown from January 21 to May 4, is based on the collection of Barbie collector Els Schouten from Waddinxveen.
