When spring is in the air it is almost as if the whole of the Netherlands collectively feels a changing in the atmosphere, wipes it’s eyes and yawns out of it’s winter slumber. Everything comes to life and is renewed, including the famous Keukenhof gardens which opens it’s doors March 20th this year.
If you’re crazy about gardening or flowers or just sheer beauty, then you should put a visit to Keukenhof gardens on top of your to do list. Every year Keukenhof sets a theme for it’s design layout of the gardens and for 2014 the theme is Holland!
In October of last year, thousands of bulbs were planted to create a mosaic depicting Amsterdam’s canal network which in 2013 had it’s 400th anniversary. Tulip mania was at it’s height during the golden age of the Netherlands and a display of 60,000 Tulip and Muscari bulbs will symbolise the Tulips popularity of this age and the iconic symbol that it has become for the Netherlands.
There are many ways to see Keukenhof’s beauty. You can hire bikes of all shapes and sizes at the main parking area for €10 or jump on one of the ‘Whisper Boats’ (€8/Adults €4/Children) which go for 45 minutes and are a great way to take some beautiful pictures. Although you cannot ride bikes through the Keukenhof grounds you can ride around the surrounding areas which have several different routes you can easily navigate.
Be sure to check the events schedule for other things to do at Keukenhof while you’re there including flower shows, an Easter bunny for the kids during April and the annual flower parade in May plus lots more!
