Need some relief from the blistering heat? An outdoor swimming pool gives you the comfort of keeping cool but doesn’t take you away from the outside atmosphere and sunshine. Here’s a list of Amsterdam’s best outdoor swimming areas.
Amsterdamse Bos is three times bigger than New York’s Central Park and boast a large woodland area with a few natural swimming spots to help you cool down on those hot summer days. The Bosbaan flows through the Amsterdamse Bos and is usually used for rowing competitions.
The Grote Vijver is perfect for swimming with toilets and showers as well. Canoes and water paddle bikes can also be rented out and when you get a bit hungry there’s also a cafe.
Also located in the Amsterdamse Bos, De Nieuwe meer is a large centrally located lake popular for fishers and boating but also big enough that you can find your own private spot to sunbake and enjoy the water.
Cleverly, the dutch have also created their own lakes around Amsterdam for citizens and visitors to enjoy during the summer months. You can find artificial beaches, toilet facilties, cafes and entrance is free!

Flevoparkbad boasts a large Olympic size swimming pool for those who love swimming laps and a more shallow pool for children. There’s also a waddling pool for the really little ones and plenty of space to bask in the sunshine. When the kids get tired of the pool there is also a large playground. First day of the month all visitors only pay €1 entrance fee.

Possibly the most well-known swimming complex in Amsterdam, this place boasts a subtropical swimming pool, a beach, indoor and outdoor pools, wave machines and to top it all off, palm trees. You can also visit the squash courts, take a turn in the solarium or grab a bite to eat in the restaurant.

Blijburg is a beautiful wooden beach pavilion nicely decorated with a popular bar and restaurant. Blijburg is located on the artificailly constructed island suburb of Ijburg. You can enjoy some delicious food and drinks, take a dip in the water, hear some live music and even have camp fires when the night air sets in.

Strand West Beach
Strand west is a large beach located on the banks of the river IJ. Although you cannot technically swim in the water you can enjoy the lounge area and bar and lay on the sandy beach while enjoying the views. There’s a volleyball area and a pool for the kids and on Sundays live bands and DJs perform.

Strand Zuid Beach
Located next to the Rai Convention Center lies the Strand Zuid. You can play some volleybal, take a lazy nap in a hammock or beach chair, lay on the sandy bank or use one of their sunbeds. They also have DJs playing regularly and if the weather decides to turn miserable the terraces can be covered and heated.

NEMO Science Museum Rooftop Beach
A clever bit of architecture has allowed for a beach to be installed on the biggest terrace in Amsterdam. Designed by architect Renzo Piano, a fantastic cascade holding 4.000 litres of water, flows through 30 water tanks. Children and children at heart will love this place with it’s watery playground. Enjoy the wonderful views of Amsterdam, take a dip in the water and lounge in the chairs while sipping a cocktail or enjoying a cold ice cream.

Club Roest is a well known bar and club located at the old Cold Gas Building on the Oostenburgereiland. During summertime Roest is the perfect place to enjoy the large sandy beach area and water. There’s also a playground for the kids and lots of festivities and events. Easy access to the water and a leftover crane that now serves as a water attraction make Amsterdam Roest an easy choice.
