Pluk de Nacht (Seize the Night), Amsterdam’s Open-Air Film Festival, is back for its eleventh edition in Amsterdam this August, airing films and showing additional art installations and photography, as well as screenings of experimental short films. The film festival takes place each year in the summer around the Netherlands including Amsterdam, Arnhem and Den Haag. In Amsterdam the film festival will take place, as it did last year, at Het Stenen Hoofd, which is only a short stroll from Amsterdam central station.
The films have all had success at major International Film Festivals but the best thing about Pluk de Nacht is that it mostly shows films that have not been picked up by Dutch distributors and would otherwise not be seen by a greater audience. With the films being shown in English or with English subtitles, there is a wide variety of genres for everyone to enjoy from documentaries to animation to rom-coms. There’s even something for horror fans. However, films are not the only things to see at the festival. You can also view art and photography installations and attend special events like debates, workshops and parties.
Short Films usually start around 9pm, when the sun has gone down and after that the feature film begins. Make sure you get in early so you can get a good viewing spot.
Come and join in the atmosphere on the beautiful waterside location with deckchairs, camp fires, food, drinks and friends. Pluk de Nacht will take place on the 6th to the 16th of August this year and don’t worry about that unpredictable Dutch weather, even if it rains the show will go on. Tickets for this event are free! Although you can reserve seats for the festival and make a small donation. Buying drinks or snacks at the bar will also be helping to support the festival. You must pick up your seat between 5.30pm and 7.30pm on the day or it will be forfeited and become available for other audience members and don’t forget to return them after the festival!
Don’t want to go home right away? Every night there’s an after party at Klup de Nacht, the festivals night club.
