Burgermeester is a fantastic, no frills burger bar that serves super fresh and innovative burgers in three locations around Amsterdam. Simple, yet sophisticated, Burgermeester is the perfect lunchtime venue. It’s affordable and open until 11.00pm, making it a great place for a quick late night snack.

The restaurant has an authentic American feel with maroon furnishings, a humble wooden floor and intimate enclaved seating areas. The straightforward design makes the food stand out. The food is made right in front of your eyes. Handmade burger pâtés are thrown on the grill as the chef delicately lays down an array of cheeses, jalapenos and vegetables – whatever your heart desires. The burgers are then placed into crisp white buns and served with garden-fresh salad, toppings and sauces.

I was offered a number of ‘sliders’ or mini burgers to try. This month’s special and my personal favourite was the ‘Goose Burger’. It had a rich gamey taste to it, which was softened up by sweet teriyaki sauce and crunchy green salad.  If you are itching for a wee bit of spice, then hit up the ‘Spanish Lamb Burger’. The Texel lamb blends perfectly with the spicy chorizo and hot jalapenos. Plus there’s the garlic sauce handy if it’s too much to handle.

Untitled2The ‘Classic Beef Burger’ is exactly what it says it is: full flavoured beef in a bun; no trimmings, just mouth-watering meat. However, if you’re looking for that little bit extra then ‘The Mister Burger’ is what you want. The same delectable beef, but combined with a full bodied tarragon mayo and yummy grilled vegetables. The ‘Pumpkin Burger’ and the ‘Goats Cheese Burger’ offer two really tasty options for those vegetarians out there. The only slight disappointment for me was the ‘Cheeseburger;’ the cheddar, mustard and ketchup detracted from the taste. Also, don’t expect chips – this restaurant is all about the meat! I’ll definitely be going back as I still haven’t tried the ‘Tuna Burger’ or the ‘Peking Duck Burger.’ Both have come highly recommended.

Affordable, delicious and healthy, check out Burgermeester down in Amsterdam!
