  • Robeco SummerNights, Last week

Robeco SummerNights is a two month long musical extravaganza that takes Amsterdam by storm, two whole months of vibrant concerts, in all their delightful variations, such as classical, jazz, cabaret, and even film scores. All these heady music is performed by internationally famous orchestras as well as soloists that leave nothing to be desired. In fact this year the SummerNights is remarkable for the vast array of concerts lined up for the music lover that is wholly ‘different from the fare provided by other such events.

So take heed, the whole enthralling happening is just one week away.

Here are the highlights of the throbbing, throbbing, pulsating summer nights:

The highpoints of Robeco SummerNights 2013 include Mike Boddé and Diederik van Vleuten paying their whimsical tribute to “Steely Dan meets Rachmaninoff” on July 14, the compositions of John Williams of Schindler’s List and Star Wars fame, performed by the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra on July 19, and a rendition of Disney songs by Amsterdam’s own stars Jamai Loman and Freek Bartels on August 17.

From Frank Sinatra to Aretha Franklin

On July 20, Christian Scott leads the Concertgebouw’s Jazz Orchestra for an incomparable ode to the all time great Miles Davis, Kurt Elling echoes the magical voice of Frank Sinatra before the Royal Concertgebouw on July 3, a special appearance of the Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club on July 27, the Dutch jazz maestro Caro Emerald initiating the Robeco SummerNights on June 29 and Trijntje Oosterhuis performing the dynamic hits of Aretha Franklin on August 24.

There is no dearth of rich classical music fare either. For instance, a veritable musical feast is in the offing in the form of The National Orchestra of Belgium conducted by Andrey Boreyko, Nikolai Lugansky on his magical piano performing Beethoven’s Third Symphony and the Rachmaninoff composition Second Piano Concerto on July 5, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, the inimitable internationally acclaimed pianist performing together with the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra on August 23.

    Gastronomic delights

Robeco SummerNights 2013 has something more to it than music! What is more enjoyable after an exhilarating concert than a sumptuous dinner? The summer nights have so thoughtfully done something about the culinary matter too. Thus the Robeco Summer Restaurant at the Royal Concertgebouw awaits you, with its long-standing tradition of offering a delicious three-course dinner for the famished, and for the not-so-famished appetites there is of course the Summer Café. Who knows, you might even get lucky and get hold of a glass of the cheerful as also a bit of sushi during the intermission.
