Does life ever feel like a stressful bundle of tasks, duties and book keeping? To those that never felt like that, lucky you, but to most city folks it comes a day when a small break is more than necessary. So it is time to head to one of Amsterdam’s best Spa’s to unwind, relax and get the latest beauty fixes to leave you feeling blissful inside and out.
The name of this Spa somewhat undermines its very original concept. The story goes that the owner spent several years in the Mayan Jungle amongst Curanderas (female healers) and Shamans. Once back in the Netherlands he used his new acquired knowledge on ancient Mexican healing practices to develop the ‘Mayan Massage’. The power of nature is at the very core of their philosophy which bases a whole selection of beauty and healing treatments on the elements of air, earth, fire and water. However there is a good balance between mysticism and western practice here, so if the Mayan massage is not for you go for an Ibiza massage or one of their Intraceutical infusions, said to be the Hollywood secret for looking youthful. To top it all, a toned down white and wooden décor gives this place a much needed touch of airiness and simplicity.
With a luxurious Art Deco interior, there is no doubt this small Spa will leave you feeling high and mighty. Located in the heart of Amsterdam, you are never too far from stepping back into 1920′s Paris for a dip in the plunge pool or a session in the infrared sauna or solarium. Although they have a limited amount of treatments, seemingly pedicures, manicures and massages and a small menu this is the perfect escape from the hectic outside world. So remember to not step back into the present before having a warming cup of tea in their classy lounge.
Zuiver means ‘Pure’ in Dutch, so no surprise that the basis of this Spa lies with the very element of purity : Water. With a number of baths, thermal baths (including an oriental bath) and indoor and outdoor jacuzzis, Zuiver Spa is a true oasis just outside the Amsterdam Bos. Equally impressive is their selection of state of the art saunas where one can choose between Finish, Infrared, Music, Steam and even Colour Therapy or Open Heart Saunas. Available is also a beauty salon, offering massages, facials and body treatments. Be warned that this is a truly indulgent experience, where even their ‘buffet’ has a luxurious kick to it. Definitely large in size with a slick, ultra modern décor throughout Zuider strikes a good balance between quality and quantity.
